Types of Rewards

First of all, there are several types of rewards or currencies in The Pokemon TCG Online. Lets briefly go over each one, their purpose, and how to earn them.

Trainer Tokens

The main in-game reward is called Trainer Tokens

You can spend tokens on most any item in the in-game Shop. Youll primarily be using tokens in the Shop for Theme Decks, limited-time Bundles, locked Booster packs (10-cards), as well as cosmetic items, like deck boxes, card sleeves, coins, and avatar items to customize your character.

  • Theme Decks cost 500 tokens
  • Locked Booster Packs cost 200 tokens
  • Limited-time Bundles rotate every week and usually cost 600-865 tokens, up to 1,200 tokens.
  • Deck Boxes, Sleeves, and Avatar items vary and cost between 50-250 tokens or so.

Your Tokens will sync with your Trainer Club account at the Pokemon.com website to spend on even more avatar items.

Tokens are also used to post Trades in the Trading Post. Each time you offer a trade itll cost 1 token per hour on the Trading Post, either 8 hours, 24 hours, or 48 hours. It doesnt cost any tokens to accept a public trade, or to make or accept a private trade between friends.

Lastly tokens can be used for entering token Tournaments. Token Tournaments cost 89 tokens and youll have a chance at earning some additional Tournament Tickets.

Tournament Tickets

Tournament Tickets are used for (you guessed it!) entering Tournaments. Tournaments are the primary way of earning unlocked booster packs for trading (more on those later).

Besides the 89 token Tournaments, Ticket Tournaments vary in cost, rewards, and Format.

There are always on-demand tournaments available 24-7 for the various Formats:

  • Theme Format (4 Tickets)
  • Standard Format (8 Tickets)
  • Expanded Format (8 Tickets)
  • Legacy Format (8 Tickets)

Each week one of the first 3 formats (Theme, Standard, or Expanded) will be selected to be an 89 token Tournament, rewarding only tokens and Tickets (no Boosters). The remaining 2 Formats and the Legacy Format cost 4 or 8 Tickets and will offer unlocked Booster packs. The cost rotates weekly on a 3-week cycle.

Occasionally (normally on weekends), a special 24 Ticket Tournament will be held that offers even more rewards!

Booster Packs

Booster Packs come from the various expansion sets of the game, and normally contain 10 additional cards.

Individual cards, as well as Booster Packs in the Pokemon TCG Online, can be either locked or unlocked.

Locked vs Unlocked Boosters and Cards

Locked cards and booster packs are yours forever and cannot be traded.

Unlocked cards and booster packs can be traded.

The majority of cards and booster packs youll earn by playing the game will be locked. This measure was put in place to discourage players from creating multiple accounts and trading cards to themselves.

Anything you purchase using tokens in the shop, such as Theme Decks and Boosters, or earn from Versus Mode and the Versus Ladder, will be locked.

Unlocked Boosters are also used as the games currency. Most players will accept unlocked booster packs in exchange for virtually any card, other pack, deck box, card sleeves, or avatar item youd like on the Trading Post.

For more information about the different ways of obtaining Unlocked Booster Packs and a general overview of the games flow, check out the companion guide: Beginners Overview.

Dont open your unlocked booster packs! Save them for trading.

If youre looking for a specific card from a set, say a Shaymin-EX from Roaring Skies, you can instead save your unlocked packs to trade for one. Its very unlikely that youll find one by opening the same number of packs its worth in the Trading market.

Gems (Canada Only)

Gems are a method of in-game purchases, currently available only in Canada. Items purchased from the Shop using Gems instead of tokens will be unlocked for trade.

100 Gems = 200 Tokens.

Most players in Canada dont commonly use Gems due to their extremely high cost. Gems have been in an extended beta test in Canada and due to their poor reception, are unlikely to be released in other countries.

How to Earn Rewards in Pokemon TCG Online

Tutorial

The first objective when starting the game is to complete the tutorials.

Theres 5 total, and yes they can be skipped, but youll earn some decent rewards if youre patient. Heres the rewards for each one:

  • 1st Tutorial: 25 tokens
  • 2nd Tutorial: 50 tokens
  • 3rd Tutorial: 75 tokens
  • 4th Tutorial: 100 tokens
  • Final Tutorial: 1 Random, Locked Booster Pack

Thats a total of 250 tokens and 1 locked booster.

Trainer Challenge

The Trainer Challenge allows you to play various Theme Decks against different computer-controlled (AI) opponents.

Youll notice in the Trainer Challenge that there are 3 different Leagues: Gold, Platinum, and City Championship. For each League youll find 12 different trainers with different types of decks.

There are also 3 different difficulty levels which change the strength of the opponents decks. Also, the points you earn for defeating a trainer depend on the difficulty. The AI still makes questionable choices and tends to use every possible card in his/her hand each turn, even to their disadvantage. Because of this, I recommend you play on the Hard difficulty.

Your first goal is to unlock the 3 Basic Theme Decks (online-exclusive): Born of Fire, Crushing Current, and Hidden Depths.

Unlocking Basic Theme Decks

Youll need to play each of the 3 Basic Theme Decks against 7 different trainers in any one of the Leagues, and win to unlock them. After each win, up to 7, youll gradually unlock some new cards for the Deck.

Once youve won against a Trainer using a certain Theme Deck, youll see a green check-mark filled in under their name.

After youve won 7 times with a Basic Theme Deck (7 green check-marks), its fully unlocked the cards are added to your collection and you can play it in Versus Mode or in a Theme Tournament.

4-Starring Trainers

Youll also notice that for each of the 12 Trainers in each League have a number of stars. The more you play (and win) against each trainer, the more points youll receive. Earn enough points and gain a star.

Here are the rewards for each star you earn against each of the 12 Trainers in a League:

  • 1 star (1,000 points): 1 token
  • 2 stars (5,000 points): 3 tokens
  • 3 stars (14,000 points): 10 tokens
  • 4 stars (30,000+ points): 1 locked, random booster

You can repeat this for each of the 12 trainers in a League and youll receive a bonus of an additional 3 locked boosters. Rinse and repeat for each of the 3 Leagues for a total of:

  • 504+ tokens
  • 45 locked boosters

Once youve 4-starred each of the Trainers (which will take quite a while), you wont be able to repeat these rewards, except for a single token for each win. Therefore, the Trainer Challenge is essentially a one-time reward.

Earning Boosters from Theme Decks

In addition to the above rewards for 4-starring trainers, theres another way to earn more locked booster packs. For each Theme Deck you get from the Shop (for 500 tokens), if you win against 12 different trainers, youll get a locked booster pack from that Theme Decks expansion set.

Each set has 2 Theme Decks (some older, unavailable sets have 3), so youre able to get at least 2 more locked boosters per set through the Trainer Challenge.

Currently there are 14 Theme Decks available in the Shop, for an additional 14 locked booster packs.

More Theme Decks will be available when the final XY expansion set launches in November 2016: XY Evolutions.

Versus Mode

Versus Mode is where youll spend most of your time in the TCG online. After youve finished the Tutorial and the Trainer Challenge, youll be able to play matches against real people online, anytime.

In Versus Mode, you can play in the Theme Format, Standard, Expanded, or Legacy. If youre a beginner, odds are you dont have many cards or have built any competitive decks, so its highly recommended that you start playing Versus Mode in the Theme Format.

You can chose any of the Theme Decks youve unlocked or purchased from the Shop. The most popular Theme Decks are the following:

  • Crushing Current
  • Hidden Depths

In addition to these decks, you may see other players use XY Basic Green/Blue/Red/Yellow. These Theme Decks have been retired and are no longer available to new players. Another popular Theme Deck is Dark Hammer, which is from an older (now in Expanded format) set that was removed the Shop in September 2016.

In Versus Mode there are two main ways to earn rewards: from the Versus Ladder and from the Victors Wheel/Mystery Box Prizes.

Versus Ladder

The Versus Ladder has numerous rewards that you can earn by earning versus points.

You earn 10 points for every Versus Match you win, and 15 if you win and were at a disadvantage (determined by your player rank and rough skill compared to your opponent).

If you lose a match, you get 1 Versus Point for each Prize card you took (0-5). Win more games in a row to increase your Win Streak. The higher your Win Streak, the more Versus Points youll earn!

Points are also reset every 21 days, along with a change in the available prizes.

You earn progressively better rewards the more points you receive in the 21-day ladder, up to a Full Art Supporter Card at 2,000 points.

Here's a list of the total rewards you can get from finishing a Versus Ladder (2,000 points in 21 days):

  • Tokens: 1,000
  • Tickets: 16
  • Boosters: 9 Current-Set Boosters, locked
  • Chests: 6 (5 Uncommon, 1 Holo, locked)
  • Cards: 10 (7 regular, 2 EX, 1 FA Trainer, locked)

For more in-depth information about the Versus Ladder Rewards read the main article.

Victors Wheel and Mystery Box Prizes

Note: The Victors Wheel for Versus Mode has been retired. Instead, a simpler Daily Versus Reward system is in place. See below this section for more information.

Each time you win a match in Versus you get to spin the Victors Wheel. The Victors Wheel has ten different wedges and 10 different prizes you can get.

Each wedge has a Mystery Box Prize as well as 1, 3, or 5 tokens.

So, for each time you win a match, youre guaranteed 1-5 tokens, plus an additional token if you win and were at a disadvantage.

For the first match of each day, win or lose, youll also get 10 tokens.

The Mystery Box prizes can only be obtained once a day, and theres 10 available each day. If you spin the wheel and it lands on a spot youve already been on today, youll earn the 1, 3, or 5 tokens, but not the Mystery Box Prize.

Each Mystery Box Prize can contain one of the following rewards:

  • 25 tokens
  • 50 tokens
  • 100 tokens
  • 375 tokens
  • 1 Ticket
  • 2 Tickets
  • 4 Tickets
  • 1 Random, Locked Booster

As you can see with a little luck, you can easily get plenty of trainer tokens (and Tickets) from Mystery Box Prizes!

Each prize has different odds, and you can only get up to 10 a day. For more information, read my post about Mystery Box Prizes.

Daily Versus Reward

To replace the Victors Wheel in Versus Mode, a simpler system was created. Instead of spinning a wheel (and possibly getting a spot for a win that resulted in no prize), now youll get a set reward for each win!

For your first 11 wins each day, youll get a total of 5 Mystery Boxes, 1 Tournament Ticket, and 65 tokens! For each win after that, youll get an additional 5 tokens.

This reward system ensures that youll get a reward for each win, but fewer possible Mystery Boxes each day. Just as before the Daily Rewards have a point of diminishing return to discourage prolonged playing in one day. Instead, players are encouraged to play for a relatively short amount of time each day.

Defeat Wheel

Note: Just like the Victors Wheel for Versus Mode, this system has been retired. Instead you will no longer get 1, 3, or 5 tokens for a loss, but a Versus Point for each Prize Card you took.

If you lose a match and didnt concede, youll get a chance to spin the Defeat (or Losers) Wheel. The Defeat Wheel has a chance to get 1, 3, or 5 tokens, but no Mystery Box Prizes.

If you conceded a match, it must have lasted at least 5 minutes (total time for both you and your opponent) in order to spin the Defeat Wheel.

Also, regardless if you conceded or not, there needs to have been no quick-turn or easy-loss conditions, such as if you repeatedly pass your turn without playing cards, attaching energy, etc.

Events: Token and Ticket Tournaments
